Abstract

This study was a cross-sectional survey aiming at determining factors associated with risk behaviors of motorcyclists among senior high school students at one high school in Suphanburi Province. The Social Ecological Model was applied as a principal research conceptual framework. Population were 270 senior high school students with 161 samples, using the simple random sampling method. Data collection was conducted through researchers’ developed questionnaire with Cronbach’s alpha values between .54 and .81. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square test were used to explain risk behavior among student motorcyclists. Findings reported that samples portrayed good level of knowledge towards risk behavior at 62.73 percent and attitude of safe drive at 68.95 percent. For risk behavior of motorcyclists, the majority showed low level of motorcycle driving risk behavior at 82.61 percent. In addition, knowledge and attitude towards motorcycle driving as well as interpersonal factors had statistically significant relationship with risk behavior among student motorcyclists (p<.05). However, gender, age, educational year, monthly income, motorcycle driving experience, experience in motorcycle accident, licensing and the use of helmet while driving had no statistically significance relationship with motorcyclist risk behavior (p>.05). Recommendation from this study is that public health organizations and educational institutions should promote the campaign of motorcycle safe drive to students. The next-of-kin of students should also help providing instructions and warnings towards safe drive to mitigate risk behaviors and prevent possible motorcycle accidents for students.
