Participatory Action Research to Promote Oral Health among Primary School Children in Rural Suphanburi Province

This participatory action research aimed to: 1) develop a participation process of stakeholders in order to promote oral health of children aged 6–12 years, and to 2) evaluate the outcome of model. Study was divided into 2 phases. First one was the development process with stakeholders, including parents, school director, health teachers, students, dental personnel, director of sub-district health promoting hospital, and chief executive of sub-district administrative organization. Data were collected by group meeting and participants’ observation. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and content analysis. The second phase consisted in the evaluation process, as well as to study the cases of 263 students in 4 primary schools. Data were collected by questionnaire and plaque control record. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test. Results revealed as follows.
Participatory oral health promotion model was divided in 4 steps: 1) problem analysis and goal setting, 2) planning implementation, 3) implementation and monitoring, and 4) evaluation. After the operation, the average self-management skills regarding promoting oral health were increased and oral plaque of students was reduced significantly as revealed in the paired-sample t-test (p<0.001).
Therefore, health organizations in rural areas should do participatory promotion of oral health, and oral health promotion for children aged 6-12 years, and this, continuously in order to find a sustainable solution to oral health problems.
