Health Literacy and Obesity Prevention in Junior High School: A Compared Study Between Male and Female Students

This descriptive study aimed to investigate the difference in health literacy level between male and female students, in order to prevent obesity in junior high school. Participants were 345 students in junior high school, aged 12-15 years. There were 106 males and 239 females, all selected by the stratified random sampling. Instrument for this study was the “Health Literacy to Prevent Obesity Questionnaire” with reliability of .89. Data analysis used percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation and Independent t-test.
The results of this study showed that health literacy in preventing obesity at Bua Yai junior high school were at a moderate level (M=82.39, SD= 3.65). Females had moderate level of health literacy for preventing the obesity (M=84.49, SD=13.23), more than males who had low level (M=77.65, SD=16.47). There was a significant difference in health literacy for preventing obesity between male and female (t=-4.10, p<.05).
Overall, health literacy for preventing obesity was at a moderate level. Nurses should provide health education on health literacy for preventing obesity in junior high school, especially in male adolescents. The cooperation among health care providers, teachers and family would be important for helping those adolescents.
