Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the correlations between social environment factors and alcohol use among adolescents. Stratified random sampling was used to get 360 students from Mahasarakham University as a sample. Data were collected by face-to-face structured interviews, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.80.  Percentage, mean, and binary logistic regression were applied for statistics analyses and adjusted by gender, age, family members and friends drinking, peer approval of drinking, parents allowing to drink and parent-teaching about alcohol hazards.

Results revealed that most of subjects (51.67 %) were female. Average age was 19.6 years old. More than half of participants (52.22%) were current alcohol users. Most of them had family members (65%) and friends (74.72%) who are currently drinking. Easy alcool access (72.78%), peer approval of drinking (72.50%), and parents allowing to drink (65.83%) were at the highest level scores for social value associated with alcohol drinking. Parents teaching about alcohol hazards were a minority (49.44%). Correlation between social environment factors and adolescent alcohol use, after adjusted all covariates, showed that high level scores of social value about alcohol harmful effects was significantly related with decreased alcohol use (aOR =0.52, 95% CI: 0.30-0.87), while easy access to alcohol was significantly related with increased alcohol use (aOR=2.09, 95% CI: 1.16-3.77).

Overall conclusion is that social environmental factors influence the level of alcohol use in adolescents. In order to solve alcohol problem, social environment measures in conjunction with other measures should be established to change individual health behavior.
