Keywords:

The purpose of this survey research was to study perceived self-efficacy among elderly people with a chronic disease in Phetchaburi Province. Participants were 324 elders with a chronic disease, including hypertension and diabetes mellitus. They were selected by quota sampling per each district, and by purposive sampling technique. The instruments, a demographic data form and a form for perception of self–management scale, were tested for content validity by 3 experts. Item objective congruence index (IOC) was ranged 0.67-1.00, and Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient yielded 0.94. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics.
Results showed that people with a chronic disease in Phetchaburi province had perception of self- efficacy at a moderate level (M =6.58, SD = 1.26). Considering sub-dimensions of self-efficacy, it was found that the elderly people with a chronic disease had emotional management score at a high level (M=7.45, SD=1.41), while exercise management in elderly people was at a lower level (M=5.59, SD=2.01).
Therefore, public health professionals and the elderly families should encourage the elderly to do more exercise, and investigate factors that help or support the elderly to do more exercise.
