The Development of an Integrative Group Counseling Program to Enhance Coping Strategies in New Nursing Students

This research and development aimed to study coping strategies in new nursing students, and to develop an integrative group counseling program to enhance them. The method of study was divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 consisted in studying coping strategies in new nursing students. Participants were 84 new nursing students in the academic year 2018. Research instrument was a questionnaire on coping strategies. Its reliability was tested using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .851. Data were collected in July 2018, and were then analyzed, using descriptive statistics. Phase 2 was the development of an Integrative group counseling program in order to enhance coping strategies in new nursing students. The content validity was checked by 5 experts in psychology, yielding the IOC value of .67 - 1.00.
The research revealed the following.
1. The overall coping strategies were at a good level (µ=2.12, σ=.22). And most of aspects were at a good level as well. The highest average score was coping in drug and alcohol use (µ=2.92, σ=.28), followed by positive view and development (µ=2.42, σ=.41), problem solving (µ=2.27, σ=.42), acceptance (µ=2.25, σ=.53), peer rejection (µ=2.22, σ=.61), religion (µ=2.21, σ=.55), and social support (µ=2.16, σ=.41).
2. The integrative group counseling program consisted of five 90-minute sessions: 1) building relationships and learn from life events, 2) development of decision-making skills, 3) optimism, 4) emotional and stress management skills, and 5) happy coexistence. The result from the program tryout with 5 nursing students found that the activities were suitable for the benefit of all new nursing students.
