High-risk pregnancy impacts the health of pregnant women and the fetus. Therefore, expectant fathers should be more involved during the high-risk pregnancy of their wives. The purpose of this descriptive correlational research was to study the correlation of anxiety, social support, and father involvement among expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy. Participants were selected following the inclusion criteria and consisted of 85 expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy and brought their wives to the antenatal clinic at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital from February to April 2018. The research instruments consisted of 1) Demographic data questionnaire 2) the Modified Father Involvement among Expectant Fathers Whose Wives Have High-risk Pregnancy questionnaire 3) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] form Y-1 and 4) the Social Support questionnaire. The modified father involvement questionnaire was validated by 3 experts, yielding a CVI score of 1.0. And Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were tested for reliability of Questioners’ number 2 to 4, yielding Cronbach’s alpha coefficient values of .92, .85, and .84, respectively. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment correlation were used to analyze the data.
Results of the study revealed that: 1) Father involvement among expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy mean score was in a high level (M=124.34, SD=16.06). 2) Anxiety had a negative correlation with father involvement among expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy (r=-.282, p<.01) and social support had a positive correlation with father involvement among expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy (r=.305, p<.01).
These finding suggest that expectant fathers whose wives have high-risk pregnancy should be assessed for father involvement. Midwives should reduce anxiety of expectant fathers and support the expectant fathers to be more involved with their wives who have high-risk pregnancy.
