Depression: an Important Mental Health Problem among Elderly with Hypertension

Depression is a common psychological illness in the elderly with hypertension. There are risk factors associated with the ageing process as well as with hypertension. As for the ageing process, factors are: 1) physical changes as cause of underlying disease, 2) the use of medication, 3) the ability to perform activities, 4) psychological and social change. For factors of illness with hypertension, they include the use of antihypertensive medication, confrontation with symptoms and hypertension complication, and difficulties in modifying lifestyle.The elderly with hypertension have the same symptoms of depression as the general elderly. Symptoms of depression include fatigue, loss of energy, negative thought and isolation. The guidelines for prevention of depression in the elderly with hypertension contain depression screening in chronic disease clinic which could prevent severe depression, keeping blood pressure under control and normal level, and family involvement. This article aims to present an awareness of the importance of preventing depression in the elderly with hypertension, mental health promotion which further reduce consequences of both depression and uncontrolled hypertension.
