The Effects of an Islam Principles-Based Psycho-Education Program on Caring Behaviors of Muslim Family Caregivers Children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Intellectual Disability: A Preliminary Study

This quasi-experimental research was a pilot study that aimed to develop an Islam-based psycho-education program on caregivers of children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and intellectual disability (ID). Participants were 10 Muslim primary caregivers taking care of a child with ADHD and ID, studying at a special education center of the province. They were selected by purposive sampling. Research instrument consisted of 1) a demographic data questionnaire, 2) a caregiving behaviors questionnaire, and 3) a psycho-education program based on Islamic principles, following the conceptual framework for residential satisfaction of Anderson, Hogarty, & Reiss (1986). The program included six sessions of 90-120 minutes, twice a week, and continually for 3 weeks. Content validity was verified by 3 experts. Reliability of caregiving behaviors questionnaire was analyzed by using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .85. Data ware analyzed by using descriptive statistics, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
The result showed that median score of caregiver behaviors of children with ADHD and ID after participating in the program were significantly higher than those before participating the program (z=2.81, p=.005). The results of this study suggest that nurses could promote health behavior of Islamic caregivers at special education centers.
