Abstract

This research aimed to develop and evaluate a dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) prevention and control model, using the appreciation influence control (AIC) process approach in community. Comparison of perception, practice of DHF prevention and control scores, as well as the House Index (HI), before and after using a developed model was run. Research was conducted in KhonKaen. 70 stakeholders participated in the model development. Sample was one hundred household representatives. The simple random sampling method was used. Data were collected by a questionnaire, a focus group discussion guideline as well as an observation guideline. Quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Content analysis was employed to analyze qualitative data.

The developed DHF prevention and control model using AIC composed: 1) a training tool to develop the capacity of health promoters to lead the health community network to prevent and control dengue, 2) a contest of houses free of mosquito larvae, 3) a training to develop skills of child health volunteers to identify mosquito larvae, 4) setting the community regulation, and 5) a campaign plan to eliminate the cause of dengue. The findings demonstrated that after using the model, the participants’ perceptions and practices about DHF prevention and control increased significantly (p<0.05). Before and after using the model, House Index (HI) scores were 62 and 2, respectively. After using the program, the HI was lower than standard criteria. The findings from this study suggested that the DHF prevention and   control model using a AIC should be applied to other areas, and adapted appropriately with each community context, in order to prevent and control DHF.
