Effect of a Health Education Program on Attitude, Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioral Control, as well as Intention of Preventing Premature Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infection of High School Students in Chonburi Province

Abstract

This one group pretest-posttest design quasi-experimental research aimed to evaluate the effects of a health education program on attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control as well as Intention of preventing premature pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in students at Bansuan Jananusorn high school in Chonburi province. Stratified random sampling was applied to recruit 45 students, age between 15 and 19. The intervention was a   health education program, which was developed based on the theory of planned behaviors.  Data collecting tool were self-administered questionnaires. The reliability of the questionnaire   was tested by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .86. Descriptive statistics were   used to analyze personal data, and paired t-test for inferential statistics.

The results revealed that after joining the program, the average scores for attitude (M=5.34, SD=0.91), subjective norm (M=3.81, SD=0.55), perceived behavioral control (M=5.76, SD=0.7), as well as intention of preventing premature pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (M=3.86, SD=0.67) were significant higher than before receiving the prevention  program (M=5.50, SD=0.96; M=3.88, SD=0.56; M=5.56, SD=0.95; M=4.24, SD=0.64, respectively)  (p<.001).

Researcher should understand the steps in the health education program, prepare media and instruments, as well as get ready for running activities. Furthermore, the program should be  integrated into regular curriculum, and extra-curricular activities throughout academic year.
