Abstract

This correlational research aimed to explore attitudes, subjective norms, perceived  behavioral control, and intention to use contraception among teenage mothers in their postpartum period, and to examine the correlations between those factors. Sample was 99 teenage mothers in postpartum care at the Trang public hospital. All data were collected between September and November, 2015. The instrument was a questionnaire including 5 parts: 1) demographic data, 2) attitude, 3) subjective norms, 4) perceived behavioral control, and 5) intention to use contraception. Content validity of instrument was validated by 3 experts (IOC = 1.00). Its reliability was tested, yielding values ranged .67 - .81. Demographic data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results were as follows.

1. Mean score of the teenage mothers’ attitude was at a high level, subjective norms, perceived control behavior, and intention to use contraception (M=4.21, SD=0.71, M=4.17, SD=0.65, M=4.32, SD=0.71, and M=2.44, SD=0.42, respectively).

2. Attitude, and subjective norms were significantly correlated with the intention to get contraception (r=.386, p< .01, and r=.529, p<.01, respectively), while there was no  significant correlation between perceived behavioral control and the intention to use   contraception.

Results of this study suggest that it is important to promote attitude and subjective norms on the use of contraception, in order to prevent repeated pregnancies among postpartum teenage mothers.
