Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study the level of positive aspects in caregiving, and the factors that correlate with the positive aspects towards caregiving dementia patients among family caregivers. Sample was family caregivers of dementia patients from Suan Saranrom Hospital in Surat Thani province, and from Songkhla Rajanakarin Psychiatric Hospital. A Simple random sampling of 365 patients was realized. Research instrument, developed by the researcher, was a questionnaire on positive aspects towards caregiving dementia patients, with alpha coefficient of .845. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results found the following.

1. Level of positive aspects in caregiving was at a high level (M= 3.80, SD = .36). The  highest level was about motivation for care (M= 4.24, SD = .68).

2. Family caregivers’ age (r = -31, p <.05), duration of care (r = .118, p <.05), number of  family caregivers (r = .139, p <.01), monthly income of family per month (r = .363, p  <.001) and patients’ age (r = .210, p <.001) had significant correlation on positive aspects in caregiving.

3. Education level of family caregivers (c2 = 10.973, p <.05), having disease of family caregiver (c2 = 5.970, p <.05), and gender of patient (c2 = 13.987, p<.001) had significant correlation with positive aspects in caregiving.

It could be concluded that positive aspects of caregiving dementia patients, from a family caregiver’s perspective, depended on individual experiences. These factors should be considered, in order to promoting the positive aspects of caregiving dementia patients.
