Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to determine motivation level and factors related to   motivation at work among dental health officers in Yala province hospitals. Sample was 93 dental health officers. Research instrument was the self-reported questionnaire on: 1) personal demographics, 2) factors of policy relationship, work consistence, environment and facilities, 3) factor of organization supports, and 4) motivation related to work. The validity and reliability of   questionnaire yielded 0.86 and 0.82, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive   statistics and Spearman’s Rank correlation coefficient.

Results showed that dental health officers were mostly female (95.7%), and worked at sub-district health promoting hospital (74.20%). The average score of motivation in dental health officers was at a high level (M=3.57, SD=0.42). The average score of factors on the policy, relationship, work consistency, environment and facilities was also at a high level, as well as factor of organization support (M=3.52, SD=0.51). When factors on the policy, relationship, work consistency, environment and facilities were stratified, results showed that relationship with leader (rs=0.491, p<0.001), environment of work (rs=0.396, p<0.001), relationship with co-workers (r=0.361, p<0.001), policy and administration of organization (rs=0.258, p=0.012) and work consistency (rs=0.214, p=0.039), were positively related to motivation at work. In addition, factors of organization support, such as material resources (rs=0.507, p<0.001), time resource (rs=0.393, p<0.001), human resources (rs=0.353, p=0.001) and financial support (rs=0.342, p=0.001), were positively related to motivation at work among dental health officers.

Therefore, to increase motivation at work among dental health officers, leaders should strengthen their relationship with workers. Furthermore, development of work environment, having a specific policy and administration conducive to work, and providing support resources from organization can help both efficiency and effectiveness at work.
