Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of an education and progressive muscle relaxation program on stress among pregnant women with preterm labor pain. Sample consisted of 50 pregnant women with preterm labor pain admitted in a tertiary hospital located in the south of Thailand, from January to June 2016. Participants were purposively selected and assigned into either an experimental group (n=25) or a control group (n = 25). The control group received standard care, while the experimental group received the education and progressive muscle relaxation program. Experimental instrument was the education and progressive muscle relaxation program. Data-collecting instruments consisted of: 1) a personal information form, and 2) a self-scoring stress questionnaire. The progressive muscle relaxation form was used to control the experiment. Validity of the instruments was approved, except for the self-scoring stress questionnaire, which was examined, yielding a value of 0.82. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and t-test. The results revealed as follows.

1.  The pregnant women with preterm labor pain in the experimental group had a significantly lower mean score of stress after intervention (M=22.04, SD=1.27) than before the intervention (M=26.24, SD=1.45) (p<001)

2. The pregnant women with preterm labor pain in the experiment group had a significantly lower mean score of stress (M=22.04, SD=1.27) than those in the control group (M=26.80, SD=1.76) (p<001).

The study suggested that the education and progressive muscle relaxation program could reduce stress of pregnant women with preterm labor pain. Therefore, this program should be applied to reduce stress for pregnant women with preterm labor pain.
