This quasi-experimental research (one-group repeated measures design) aimed to construct a valid training program for developing health counseling competency among registered nurses. Sample included 12 registered nurses from a sub-district health promoting hospital in Songkhla province, Southern Thailand. Participants were selected following 4 criterion: 1) an average score for health counseling competencies below the 50th percentile, 2) 1 year of professional experience, 3) undergraduate nursing education, and 4) willing to participate in the program. Participants were trained in the program for enhancing health counseling competency. The health counseling program for registered nurses was developed based on Spencer & Spencer (1993) Competence Model. The instruments were the health counseling assessment of competencies form, and the health counseling program for developing health counseling competency among professionals. The Alpha Reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient yielding a value of 0.80. The model was validated by three experts. There were 3 measurements: before and after the experiment, plus a 2 months follow-up. Data were analyzed by using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Mean of health counseling competency was compared before and after the experiment, plus a follow-up by testing with Bonferroni method. The results of the study were as follows.
There were statistically significant differences in the total health counseling competency components and each component of health counseling competency in the experimental group before and after participation in the program, and after follow-up period at the level of .01. Therefore, the training program on health counseling for nurses was a key factor to enhance health counseling competencies.
