This one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of using a training tool kit on the lifting skills and the lifting angle at the trunk (torso angle) of village health volunteers (VHVs), when they are helping vulnerable individuals affected by flooding. Participants, 40 VHVs working in repeated flooded areas in Hat Yai municipality, Songkhla Province, were purposively recruited. The VHVs received knowledge in assessing readiness of vulnerable individuals before transfer, in order to prevent back injuries during lifting, and to correct methods of lifting. In addition, small groups of 4-10 of participants were trained for lifting while using stretcher transfer. The observations on lifting skills of volunteers were taken on a Lifting Skills Record form, while the lifting torso angle was measured using the Kinovea program. Content validity of training tool kit was examined by 3 experts. The inter-rater agreement of Transfer Skill Record and Lifting Torso Angle were .83 and .83, respectively. Demographics were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the hypotheses were examined using Wilcoxon signed ranks test.
Results showed that the mean rank for stretcher transfer skills score after training was significantly higher than that before training (z=5.60, p<.001) and the torso angle after training was significantly decreased compared with that before training (z=4.93, p<.001). Therefore, it is suggested to use this training tool kit for training VHVs, so to reduce back pain in helping vulnerable individuals affected by floods.
