Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine Islamic based cognitive behavior therapy on depression among caregivers of bedridden older persons in a context where the Islam religion is prevalent. Participants consisted of 22 Muslim caregivers of bedridden older persons with Islam faith in Phang-Nga Province. Subjects were randomly assigned to experimental group (n=11) or control group (n=11). There were two types of instruments: intervention program and data collection tools. Program consisted of 9 sessions lasting 50 to 60 minutes each, three times a week. Data collection tools consisted of personal questionnaires and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one way repeated ANOVA, and independent samples t-test.

Results showed that depression scores in the experimental group were significantly lower immediately after receiving the program (M=4.36, 2.27, SD=1.63, 0.65; M=9.18, SD=3.09; p<.05) and at 1-month follow-up (M=2.27, SD=0.20; M=4.36, SD=0.49; p<.05) than before receiving the program. In addition, depression scores in the experimental group were significantly lower than the control group (M=4.36, 2.27, SD=21.63, 0.65; M=9.45, 9.55, and SD=2.51, 2.34, respectively; p<.01) immediately after the program and at 1-month follow-up.
