Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the ten-item short form of Thai Geriatric Anxiety Scale (Thai GAS-10). Participants were 330 community-dwelling older adults living in community. Multi-stage random sampling was used to select districts and villages. Participants were recruited using simple random sampling without replacement. A demographic questionnaire, and the Thai GAS-10 were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, range, mean, and standard deviation. Principle component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate construct validity of Thai GAS-10. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was also used in order to determine internal consistency of Thai GAS-10.

The results from PCA with Varimax revealed that the Thai GAS-10 had two components with eigenvalues exceeding 1, explaining 38.05% and 11.15% of the variance, respectively. CFA was in support of 2-factor model of Thai GAS-10 (p>.05), goodness of fit (index=.976), adjusted goodness of fit (index=.955), comparative fit (index=.992), standardized root mean square (residual=.035), and root mean square error (approximation=.034), which all together indicated a good model fit.

These results suggest that Thai GAS-10 is at a good level and suitable for the Thai elderly anxiety assessment.
