Effects of the Maneevej Exercise Technique with Pranayama Breathing on Labor Pain and Duration of Labor in Primiparous Women

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of practicing the Maneevej exercise technique with Pranayama breathing on labor pain and duration of labor in primiparous women. All participants visited the antenatal care clinic and later on were admitted to deliver a baby at a hospital in the Southern of Thailand between October 2018 and December 2019. Purposive sampling was used to recruit the 52 primiparous women who were equally allocated to the experimental group (n = 26) to receive a Maneevej exercise technique training with Pranayama breathing program, and the control group (n = 26), for receiving routine nursing care. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results showed that the experimental group had significantly lower labor pain scores during the latent phase, active phase, transitional phase, and in the second stage of labor than the control group (t = 3.92; t = 4.21; t = 4.58; z = 6.14; p < .001, respectively). The duration of labor in the experimental group was significantly shorter in the latent phase than that in the control group (t = 4.78; p < .001). Therefore, this program can be utilized with childbirth preparation to reduce labor pain at all stages of labor with primiparous women.
