Keywords:

Objectives: The objectives of this research study were to: 1) study the factors influencing depression and suicide of adolescence in university, 2) to develop a model of causal factors effecting depression and suicide, and 3) to examine a casual relationship model of influencing factors on depression and suicide with empirical data.
Material and Methods: This research was predictive correlational design. The participants were 1,543 undergraduate students enrolled in 2019 academic year and selected by stratified randomly sampling. Data were collected by using a questionnaire consisting of 7 parts: personal profile, social support survey form, the negative event scale survey form, positive psychology capital survey form, stressful event survey form, rumination response scale survey form and depression survey form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling.
Results: Rumination, negative life events, stress, social support, and positive psychological capital were related to depression and suicidal and could jointly predict with depression (37.40%) and with suicidal (18.19%). A casual relationship model of influencing factors showed that rumination, negative life events, stress had positive relationships on depression and suicide. Social support and positive psychological capital resulted in decreased depression and suicidal thoughts. Structural model was consistent with the empirical data as follows. The measurement validity of all latent variables was very good. The indicator loading values of all empirical variables were positive and were between 0.757 - 0.920 with statistically significant at the .001 level. The mean communality of the variable group or average variance extract (AVE) was between 0.573 - 0.847 and the composite reliability (CR) of all latent variables was between 0.872 - 0.943 and GOF was 0.449, indicating that the measurement was reliable and that the model fitted with the empirical data.
Conclusion: The relevant factors from this study could be applied to develop a program to prevent the occurrence of depression and suicide among adolescents in higher education.
