Abstract

Objective: The propose of this research was to study the characteristic of homeless patients in in-patient department of Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry.

Material and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from January 2017 to December 2018 among homeless patients in in-patient department of Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry. Research instruments were demographic data and the treatment form created by the researchers. Statistics used to analyze the data were percentage, mean and standard deviation.

Result: It was found that a total number of 261 homeless patients, 191 and 70 patients were admitted as inpatients during the year 2017 and 2018. Most of the sample were male, had no diseases and staying in the area of Bangkok. The majority of delivery was police/military/administrative officials. Most homeless with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were found in public places. Patients discharged from hospital, most of them were taken home by the relatives.

Conclusion: Based on data from homeless records admitted as inpatients during the year 2017 and 2018, It can be used as a guideline for joint operations between public and private sector, including integration of care, in order to improve the care system for mental health services and improve the quality of life for homeless patients.
