Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to examine Health Literacy and Self-Care Behaviors of Hypertension Persons in Lampang Province, Thailand. A stratified random sampling was employed to select a representative sample of 500 individuals diagnosed with hypertension. The research instrument comprised personal information, Health Literacy, and self-care behaviors of hypertension persons. The statistical inference employed was instrumental in ascertaining the content validity, with coefficients of 0.97 and 0.86, as well as the Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient, which was found to be 0.85 and 0.74, respectively.

The prevailing demographic data indicated that the majority of the participants were females with an average age of 59.71 years, married, and had attained an elementary level of education. The individuals demonstrated a notably high level of Health Literacy, with a percentage of 51.6%. Their functional health literacy aspects was found to be at a moderate level, accounting for 46.0%. Additionally, their self-care behaviors were observed to be at an elevated level, with 73.4% of participants engaging in these behaviors.  Physical exercise was recorded at a moderate level among these individuals, accounting for 60.4% of their self-care behaviors. Healthcare professionals devise and execute initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness of hypertension, with a particular emphasis on educating older adults. The provision of training and capacity building opportunities for community health volunteers can facilitate the promotion of self-care practices, such as regular exercise, among individuals diagnosed with hypertension, ultimately contributing to effective care.
