Health Status and Social Support among End-stage Renal Disease Patients with Peritonitis Undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
Abstract
The occurrence of peritonitis in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is a crucial complication that should be monitored and closed-up care. This descriptive research aimed to examine the health status, social support, and factors related to social support among 87 end-stage renal disease patients with peritonitis undergoing ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) selected by purposive sampling in the general hospital in Phayao Province. The research instrument comprised three components: 1) a biographical information form; 2) a health evaluation form; and 3) a social support questionnaire, which had a reliability of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Fisher's test, and Spearman's rank correlation.
The results of the study revealed that the average annual duration of undergoing CAPD, the number of times from peritonitis, and the received peritonitis treatment were 2.05 years (mean = 2.05, S.D. = 0.77), 1.76 years (mean =1.76, S.D. = 1.09), and 1.70 years (mean =1.70, S.D. = 1.09), respectively. Furthermore, the overall mean level of social support was high (mean = 4.34, S.D. = 0.71), and the primary caregiver in the family was statistically significantly associated with social support (p<.05). Therefore, healthcare providers should consider the health status of CAPD patients and encourage the participation of their principal caregivers in the family in caring for the CAPD patients for sustainable and continuous peritonitis prevention.
