The Effects of Factors on Registered Nurse Practice for Caring Tuberculosis Patients in Community, Muang district, Lampang

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to study the factors affecting on registered nurse practice for caring Tuberculosis (TB) patients in the community in Muang district, Lampang. The participants were 20 nurses who were responsible for TB prevention and control at tumbon health promoting hospital. Data was collected by interview combined with the questionnaires and semi-structured questions were validated by 3 experts. The data were analyzed using content analysis.

            The results showed that almost TB patients were male and in elderly people. Causes of TB connected to health behaviors, occupation, and living environment. Actions on TB by nurses in the community included patient contact screening, referring for treatment, home visiting and providing TB knowledge for people. Factors affecting on successful practice, on one hand, consisted of 1) community involvement, 2) networking with multi-disciplinary, 3) cooperation of patient and family member, and 4) Taking advantage of the advancement in technology that may help in surveillance. and monitoring of patient treatment. On the other hand, factors that caused problems and obstacles in the practice were 1) shortage of health care providers working in the community, 2) COVID-19 pandemic, 3) Elderly patients who were dependent, no caregivers led to problem of taking medication continuously and consequently becoming drug-resistance patient, and 4) patients and family did not concern about TB infection and transmission.    Empowering the potential of people in the community to involve in caring for TB patients as a team, networking with partners and building an accurate understanding of TB may support the effectiveness of nurse’s practice on TB patients care.
