Soft skills of Nursing Graduates in Private Hospitals

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to (1) synthesize the soft skills of private hospital nurse graduates and (2) study the soft skills requirements of nurse graduates in private hospitals in the Samut Sakhon province. The research consisted of two sample groups: (1) a group of 7 nurse administrators from private hospitals in Samut Sakhon, selected as a targeted sample and interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire, and (2) a group of 250 entry-level nurse administrators and practicing nurses in private hospitals in Samut Sakhon, selected through simple random sampling. The quantitative data collection tools consisted of personal information (4 items) and the soft skills of nurse graduates in private hospitals in Samut Sakhon (60 items) on a Likert scale with approximately 5 levels and a measurement reliability of 0.958. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation (S.D.), and content analysis of interview data. The research findings revealed that there were six soft skills  of nurse graduates in private hospitals in Samut Sakhon, ranked in descending order as follows: 1) communication skills (mean = 4.73, S.D. = 0.46), 2) interpersonal skills (mean = 4.68, S.D. = 0.51), 3) teamwork skills (mean = 4.66, S.D. = 0.51), 4) leadership skills (mean = 4.61, S.D. = 0.53), 5) problem-solving and decision-making skills (mean = 4.53, S.D. = 0.56), and 6) analytical thinking skills (mean = 4.49, S.D. = 0.59). These findings are consistent with the desired competencies for nurse graduates as determined by the Nursing Council and should be promoted. Enhancing these six skills in nurse graduates is crucial to meet the needs of employers and ensure effective performance in private hospital nursing settings.
