Abstract

Obesity is a major health problem with an increasing trend around the world. Arm swing exercises and diet are management methods that have been used for obesity. The purpose of this study to compare waist circumference and body mass index within and between participating in arm swing exercise and dietary control program group and usual care group. The study was quasi–experimental research with two groups pretest-posttest design. Fifty-two subjects were selected by purposive sampling with qualified criteria, and were assigned to either the control group received usual care or experimental group received arm swing exercise and dietary control program for 16 weeks, 26 in each group. The research instruments consisted of digital weight scale, waist tape, the personal data record form, the arm swing exercise and dietary control program, the arm swing exercise guide, the video presents an exercise model for swinging arms to reduce belly reduce disease, the arm swing exercise record, the dietary guidelines for obese, and the meal record form. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics namely paired t-test and independent t-test, the level of significance p < .05

Results: The findings revealed that at the end of 16 weeks, there was no statistically significant difference in waist circumference and body mass index between the two groups (p=.14 and p=.45). But in the experimental group, it was found the significantly different in waist circumference and body mass index between before and after received program (p<.001 and p<.001), while those in the control group was not significantly different (p=.23 and p=.98). Hence, the implementation of arm swing exercise and dietary control program reduce the waist circumference and body mass index in the experimental group. Therefore, people with obesity should be encouraged to use it continuously and promote the use of this program in other obese people.
