Abstract

The purpose of this predictive study was to identify factors that might predict blood pressure control in persons with hypertension in Muang Lampang district, Lampang. A total of 385 hypertensive patients aged 35 years and above were randomly selected from primary health care hospitals in Muang Lampang district, Lampang. Self-reported questionnaires were used to collect data including the Functional Communication and Critical Health Literacy Scales (FCCHL) and the Self-Care Behavior in hypertension. The reliability coefficients of both questionnaires were 0.70 and 0.88 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and binary logistic regression.

The finding revealed that percentage 59 of sample could control their blood pressure. Blood pressure control was predicted by number of anti-hypertensive drug (OR = 2.91, CI= 1.20-7.03, p = .018), co-morbidity (OR = 1.53, CI= 1.01-2.33, p = .044) and health literacy (OR = 1.02, CI= 1.0-1.05, p = .044).  Three factors predicted blood pressure about 3.8%. Critical health literacy predicted blood pressure control. The study results guided health care providers to promote health literacy in order to achieve optimal blood pressure.
