Abstract

      Dental caries and gingivitis in children with special needs are higher than general children. One of the main reasons is improper tooth brushing. Parents therefore play an important role in children’s tooth brushing including training children to brush their teeth by themselves. But with disabilities in language comprehension and communication, as a result, children do not cooperate in tooth brushing. Therefore, the use of visual media is an important aid in communication between children and parents. The quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of using Tooth brushing process picture on helping to communicate the brushing process to children with special needs by their parents at home among 32 pairs of parents-children in Wat Chang Khian School, Chiang Mai Province in the academic year 2021. The research instruments composed of the demographic data interview form, children's toothbrushing behaviors and the child's upper front teeth plaque record. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistic and compare the efficacy of intervention by Wilcoxon rank-sum test and fisher’s exact test.

      The results showed that the average age of children was 11.2 years. 96.9% of the children brushed their teeth by themselves while 34.4 % of the children brushed their teeth without parent supervision and 78.1 % of them brushed their teeth twice a day. After receiving Tooth brushing Process Picture Communication Aid, it was found that 96.9 % of children had better brushing behaviors, 75.0 % of them had more systematic brushing, and the amount of plaque on the tooth surface before and after using visual media was statistically significant reduced at P < .001

      In conclusion, the use of Tooth brushing Process Picture Communication Aid at home has clearly changed tooth brushing behavior of children in a better way.
