Rational Drug Use Literacy of Nursing Students at Public Nursing College in Chiangmai
Abstract
The purpose of this descriptive research was to study the rational drugs used literacy among 250 nursing students in the academic year 2020 recruited by stratified sampling technic. Data were collected by an online survey questionnaire reporting validity of the questionnaire range was 0.67 – 1.00. Reliability of basic knowledge of drug use and rational drug use literacy was tested by Kuder-Richardson reporting as 0.79 and 0.96 respectively. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. A relationship between factors and rational drugs used literacy was analyzed by using the Chi-square test and the Pearson Correlation.
Most participants (77.60%) completed the pharmacological subject and experienced learning nursing subjects from classroom and clinical practice. The research findings showed that about half of the participants (49.6%) had a high level of basic knowledge of drug use (M=12.85 SD=3.31). Most of the participants (88%) had a high level of rational drugs used literacy (M=51.97 SD=13.40). It is reported that years of study, completion of the pharmacological subject, experience learning nursing subjects, and levels of basic knowledge of drug use were significantly associated with levels of rational drug use literacy (p<.001). Also, basic knowledge of drug use was positively correlated with rational drug use literacy (r=. .586, p<.001). The findings also suggest that nursing colleges should develop practical rational drug use learning programs or short courses for improving nursing students’ knowledge and applying rational drug use in clinical practice effectively.
