Competencies and self development of Thai clinical psychologists

Objective: This was a survey research that aimed to study: 1) the level of clinical competency, 2) possible factors affecting the level of clinical competency, 3) the state of continuing education and, 4) the need for self-improvement of Thai clinical psychologists.
Methods: The sample of the research was active clinical psychologists practicing nationwide who were self-selected and voluntarily responded to the invitation letter. In total, 303 gave their consents and answered the research questionnaire, which was developed to investigate the levels of clinical competency and professional self-improvement. The questionnaire was tested for content validity and reliability of internal consistency. Descriptive statistics and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data.
Results: The participants showed self-improvement needs; however, there was a limited frequency of continuing education. More than half of the participants (55.3%) reported their attendance to a workshop less than one time per year. The mean scores of both clinical diagnosis competency and therapeutic competency were in the mid-range. The results indicated significant correlations (p<.05) between the competency levels and the years of clinical experience, the frequency of self-study especially in reading international journal articles, and the frequency of attendance to the Thai Clinical Psychologist Association’s annual academic conference.
Conclusion: Thai clinical psychologists should enhance their opportunity for self-development in clinical practice, skills, and knowledge.
