Blood Lead Levels among Workers Exposed to Lead and Residents in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to assess blood lead levels (BLLs) and identify factors associated with BLLs among lead-exposed workers and residents of Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 70 informal lead-exposed workers and 69 residents from the same district. Data were collected through blood sampling from the antecubital vein and face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire addressing personal characteristics, consumption behaviors, and occupational factors. The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Exact test.
The results showed that the median BLLs of lead-exposed workers and residents were 1.65 μg/dL and 0.92 μg/dL, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Thirty percent of lead-exposed workers had BLLs exceeding 3.0 μg/dL, compared to only 8.7 percent of residents (p = 0.002). Among the lead-exposed workers, occupational factors significantly associated with lead exposure included weekly working hours (p=0.018) and job type (p=0.026). In addition, the workers who consumed shellfish once or more per week had higher BLLs than those who consumed shellfish less than once per week (p=0.019). In the resident group, smokers had higher BLLs than non-smokers (p=0.007).This study indicates that BLLs among both lead-exposed workers and nearby residents were below the surveillance threshold. Nonetheless, ongoing monitoring of lead exposure is recommended for at-risk populations.
