Factors Affecting Dog Owners' Decision to Vaccinate Their Dog Against Rabies in Chonburi Province

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and factors influencing dog owners' decisions to vaccinate their dogs against rabies in Chonburi Province. A cross-sectional design was employed. This study guided by the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) framework. The sample consisted of 402 dog owners aged 18 years and older. Most participants were female (76.4%) with a mean age of 51.86 years. The majority had completed secondary or vocational education (42.8%), earned a monthly income between 15,001 and 50,000 THB (47.5%), and worked as general laborers (28.6%). Over half (52.5%) allowed their dogs to roam freely, and 77.4% had not registered their dogs. The prevalence of annual rabies vaccination was 78.4%. Factors significantly associated with rabies vaccination included owner age ≥60 years (aOR=2.65, 95%CI=1.00-6.97), occupation as a farmer (aOR=10.00, 95%CI=2.08-47.90), pet registration (aOR=3.49, 95%CI=1.50-8.12) and having a positive attitude towards rabies prevention (aOR = 1.83, 95%CI = 1.04-3.22). The findings highlight the necessity of promoting comprehensive pet registration, as well as continuous communication to build accurate knowledge and foster positive attitudes among pet owners, for the effective and sustainable long term control and prevention of rabies.
