Mini-implant-assisted removable partial denture
Main Article Content
Abstract
The mini-implant retained denture is used in place of the conventional denture. Patients who lose many teeth in the mandible cannot efficiently utilize the conventional partial denture. The most frequent complications of distal extension mandibular removable partial dentures are loss of retention and irritation or ulceration and the rotational movement of the dentures. To increase stability and retention, the mini-implant-assisted partial denture is used in place of the mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures.
This case report describes an 80-year-old Thai male patient presenting with complete maxillary edentulism and partial mandibular edentulism, accompanied by difficulty in mastication and poor retention of existing dentures. Oral rehabilitation was performed using an upper complete denture and a mandibular distal extension removable partial denture, supported by 2 mini dental implants that had been placed 8 years prior to prosthetic treatment. The mandibular removable partial denture was designed with stud-type attachments and bilateral balanced occlusion to optimize load distribution during mastication. Follow-up evaluations were conducted to assess denture function, peri-implant bone loss, implant stability, and patient satisfaction. After 8-year-follow-up period, the mini dental implants remained clinically stable despite the pretense of some peri-implant bone resorption. The prostheses demonstrated satisfactory function, with significant improvement in masticatory efficiency, denture stability, and patient confidence. Overall patient satisfaction and quality of life were markedly improved.
The use of mini dental implant-assisted a mandibular distal extension removable partial denture, in combination with a maxillary complete denture, represents an effective and minimally invasive treatment option for elderly patients. This approach can enhance denture stability, masticatory performance, and long-term patient satisfaction. Proper oral hygiene maintenance and regular follow-up are crucial for the success of the treatment.
