Abstract

Objective:  To study outcomes of rehabilitation in intermediate phase of stroke patients, comparing ability to perform activities of daily living between before and after rehabilitation and comparing rehabilitation effectiveness between difference stroke severity groups.

Methods: Using retrospective study to collect demographic data, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale, Thai version (NIHSS-T), Barthel index (BI) before and after rehabilitation from medical record of stroke patients during January – June 2019 in Somdejprasangkharach 17 hospital. Rehabilitation effectiveness (Difference of BI after and before rehabilitation divided by difference of maximum BI and BI before rehabilitation) was calculated.

Results: Of 87 stroke patients, 73.6% were males, 87.4% had ischemic stroke and mean age was 63.73 (SD 11.78) years. Median BI score (min, max) before and after rehabilitation were 14 (0,19) and 20 (6,20), respectively. The BI score after rehabilitation was increased significantly when compared with BI score before rehabilitation. Stroke severities were categorized by using NIHSS-T. Median rehabilitation effectiveness (min, max) of Minor stroke, Moderate stroke, Moderate to severe stroke groups were 100(75,100), 100(40,100), 52.5 (12.5,95), respectively. Rehabilitation effectiveness of Minor stroke and Moderate stroke groups were superior to Moderate to severe stroke group significantly.

Conclusion: Intermediate phase of stroke patients receiving rehabilitation service had statistical significant improvement in ability to perform activities of daily living, especially in Minor and Moderate stroke groups.
