Abstact


Background


The northern people and Karen ethnic groups have a particular way of food consumption also the cultural and belief that related to health behaviors. This research aims to study the health behaviors and the diabetes mellitus (DM) protection among the Karen ethnic group in Doi Luang district, Chiang Rai province. It should to use the information of the health care system and Diabetes mellitus (DM) protection in the future. 


Objective


To study health care behaviors that affected to Diabetes mellitus (DM) protection among Karen ethnic group in Doi Luang district, Chiang Rai.


Methods


The mix method study design was quantitative and qualitative method that used the questionnaires and in-depth interview. There were 350 Karen ethnic groups and purposive sampling for the participants. The statistics were analyzed descriptive statistics, showing that frequency, percentage, mean, inferential statistic and standard deviation: The qualitative data was analyzed on content analysis.


 Results


The study found that the participant does not consume diverse vegetable, (68.8%).The participant consume fruit and vegetable less than half kilogram per day, (68%).The participant does not exercises and play sport, (87.0%). The participant was rarely to movement, (33.9%). And 64.7 percent of the participant believed that inherited diabetes cannot prevent the disease. The participant gets upset when they banned for eating what they like 71.3 percent. Moreover, we found that participants perceived susceptibility of Karen behavior’s and perceived severity has related to diabetes mellitus (DM) protection and Negative perceived barriers and Modifying Factors that affected to health behaviors


Conclusion and Discussion


The health care and Diabetes mellitus (DM) protection among Karen ethnic groups were perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived barriers and Modifying Factors that affected to health behaviors. For the recommendation, they need to be presented to the other organizations or people that concern to participants. In order to the further movement and developing the intervention and prevention on diabetes mellitus (DM) patients.
