Abstract

Introduction: Suboptimal asthma control remains highly prevalent among affected individuals. Continuous self-management is, therefore, essential for improving health outcomes within this population.

Research objectives: To examine the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary team–based self-management program on self-management behaviors, levels of asthma control, and pulmonary function in patients with asthma.

Research methodology: This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group design. A purposive sample of 58 adult patients with asthma was equally assigned to an experimental group (n = 29) and a control group (n = 29). The experimental group received a self-management program based on the Creer’s conceptual framework, which was delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprising registered nurses, sub-district health-promoting hospital nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists. The control group received routine nursing care. Research instruments included a self-management behaviour questionnaire, an asthma control assessment, and pulmonary function test. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the paired t-test, the independent t-test, Friedman’s test, and the chi-square test.

Results: Within the experimental group, self-management behaviors, asthma control, and pulmonary function showed statistically significant improvements from baseline. The experimental group demonstrated significantly better self-management behaviors and asthma control compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in pulmonary function between the two groups.

Conclusions: A multidisciplinary team-based self-management program promotes self-management behaviors and improves asthma control.

Implications: The multidisciplinary team–based self-management program should be applied into nursing practice to enhance the self-care behaviors of patients with asthma.
