Abstract

Introduction: Pre-hospital care of the outpatient nursing service unit is the first and important point for assessing and taking care of patients quickly and accurately.

Research objective: To develop a system of care for patients in the pre-treatment phase and examine the effectiveness of the development in the outpatient department’s pre-treatment care system at Pone Pi Sat Hospital, Nongkhai.

Research methodology: Action research. Purposive sampling was used to select 19 professional nurses who worked in the outpatient and emergency departments and the 240 profiles of surveillance patients receiving services at the outpatient department. The instruments were the assessment of knowledge and understand the classification of patients, the satisfactory assessment, the focus group, and in-depth interviews. The quantitative data was analyzed by frequency distribution, percent, mean and a Paired t- test. The content analysis was used for the qualitative data.

Result: The development of a system of care for patients included 1) development of nursing competencies in screening and caring of patients, 2) having nurse screening patients during 7-8 am. and 12 -1 pm. and 3) using guideline for caring patients who need to be monitored. After using a system of care for patients, the knowledge of professional nurses has significantly improved (p<.001). They were satisfied with the use of the care system at a moderate level which was beneficial to service customers and hospital with the highest mean scores of 4.52 (SD = .82)

Conclusion: This newly developed of a system of care for the pre-treatment phase can be used to monitor and prevent the incidence of deterioration while waiting for examination.

Implication: The research results can be used to develop nursing competencies and guidelines for nursing practice in outpatient department.
