Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol drinking before the age of 15 increases the risk of alcohol addiction which affects the adolescents’ health, behavior, and cognitive, especially for the brain that is not fully developed. To prevent new drinkers, program guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB) was investigated.

Research objective: To compare the average scores within the intervention group and between the intervention group and the comparison group at baseline, after the intervention, and 4-week follow-up period.

Research methodology: This study used a quasi-experimental design. Participants consisted of 72 male students in secondary school in Loei province. Thirty-four participants were assigned to the intervention group and 38 to the control group. The TPB was applied to guide the program.  A set of self-administered questionnaires was used to collect data at baseline, after the intervention, and 4-week follow-up period. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-Squares, Independent t-test, and Paired t-test.

Results: Significant higher scores by intervention group participants between baseline and follow-up were found for knowledge of avoiding alcohol consumption, attitudes towards alcohol consumption behavior, conformities to the reference group in avoiding alcohol consumption, self-efficacy in avoiding alcohol consumption, and intention to avoid alcohol consumption (p< .05). At follow-up, between-group significant differences of all these variables were also found (p< .05).

Conclusion: As a result, the program guided by the TPB affected the increasing of the intention to avoid alcohol consumption.

Implications: The TPB -based program should be used to guide the activities for both male and female students by adapting the activities appropriately.
