Introduction: unconsciousness attributed to cardiopulmonary arrest is crisis and may lead to patient death or brain death.
Research objectives: to investigate the effectiveness of Basic Life Support Programs delivered by Senior Nursing Students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Bangkok.
Research methodology: this was a quasi-experimental study with two group pretest-posttest design. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit nursing students from the first year of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Bangkok in the 2021 academic year. Sixty nursing students were recruited into the study; 30 participants were assigned to the experimental group and 30 to the control group. To be eligible for the study, the participant must never receive basic life support (BLS) training prior to participate in the study. The experimental group received the BLS program delivered by 15 nursing students from the third year. The BLS program included participatory learning, demonstration and return demonstration, and focus group. Data were collected using the BLS knowledge and BLS skills questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, and standard deviation), paired t-test, and independent t-test.
Results: at follow-up, between-group significant differences of BLS knowledge mean scores were not found (p > .05). At follow-up, between-group statistically significant differences of BLS skills mean scores were found (p<.001). The mean score on BLS skills of the experimental group at follow-up (=29.83, SD=0.65) was significantly greater than the control group (
=20.30 SD=2.05) (p <.001).
Conclusion: the BLS program delivered by the third-year nursing students enabled the first-year nursing students to improve knowledge and BLS skills.
Implications: The BLS program should be continuously promoted to other nursing students.
