Abstract

Introduction: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for schizophrenia. However, a literature review shows that ECT has been associated with both physical and psychological health complications.

Objective: To present concepts and roles of nurses in caring for schizophrenia patients receiving the Modified electroconvulsive therapy (m-ECT).

Key issue: Among schizophrenia patients treated by modified ECT, the short-term and long-term complications were different. Nurses need to take care of schizophrenia patients treated by modified ECT with a standard nursing process before, during, and after ECT done.

Conclusion: Nurses can use nursing process to take care of schizophrenia patients during and after modified ECT for their safety.

Recommendations: The presented nursing care can be applied to patients with other mental health problems who receive the modified ECT
