Introduction: The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has impacted on elderly’s mental health. Lack of awareness of COVID-19 prevention, and mental health promotion may affect both physical and mental health among the elderly.
Objective: To investigate the relationships between elderly self-care behaviors in the context of COVID-19, mental health status, and in-depth mental health self-care behaviors in the context of COVID-19.
Methodology: The study used a mixed method design. The study was conducted among the elderly in Suphanburi province. The participants were 191 elderly and a questionnaire was used to collect data. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient). Qualitative data were collected from 10 elderly using in-depth interviews and then content analysis was performed.
Result: Findings showed that elderly people reported less happiness. Anxiety related to COVID-19 was at a low level. Self-care behavior to prevent COVID-19 is at a good level. There was a positive significant relationship between happiness and self-care behavior (r=.336, p=.01). Also, anxiety related to COVID-19 negatively significantly associated with self-care behavior (r= -.181 p=.05). Qualitative data analysis revealed key issues as follows: 1) Mental health in the new normal is about accepting changes and having a good emotional foundation; And 2) Mental self-care in the new normal is self-care for physical health, emotional and mental health, using technology, social distancing, and self-care for themselves and significant others.
Conclusion: Mental health care in a new normal involves accepting changes and having a good emotional foundation. This will help the elderly to practice good self-care during the context of COVID-19 pandemic.
implications: As a result of the study, differences in the mental health status of the elderly could be find in different age groups in large or small provinces or regions.
