Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of depression in the elderly continues to increase. One of the non-drug treatments for depression among elderly is the use of music therapy. It combines natural sounds with musical frequencies which is similar to brain waves, leading to a response within the mind, and resulting in emotional change. Ultimately, depression would be lessened and achieve better mental health.

Research objectives: To compare the average score of depression among elderly in the experimental group before and after receiving music therapy, and to compare the average score of depression among elderly between the experimental group and the control group before and after receiving music therapy.

Research methodology: This study used a quasi-experimental design. Participants were 80 elderly whose diagnosed with mild to moderate depression. They were recruited from area of the primary healthcare unit in Trang province. Then, 30 participants were assigned to an experimental group, and 30 to a control group. Research instruments were a demographic questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the Music Therapy Self-Assessment Questionnaire (MTSQ) and manual, and music file. Data were analyzed using   mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, and independent t-test.

Results: Results showed that at follow up, depression mean score (M=12.32, SD=1.69, p<.05) of the participants in the experimental group was significantly lower than at baseline (M=16.53, SD=2.12, p<.05). Moreover, at follow-up, depression mean score (M=12.32,SD=1.69, p<.001) of the participants in  the experimental group was significantly lower than a control group (M=15.82, SD=2.06, p<.001).

Conclusion: Music therapy program can be used as an alternative treatment for elderly with depression in the community.

Implications: Caregivers should use music therapy to decrease depression in elderly whose diagnosed with mild to moderate depression. However, a favorite and type of music should be considered prior to the use of music therapy.
