Introduction: Rational drug use (RDU) is one of the competencies of nursing graduates. Therefore, educational institutions must have a method of teaching and learning that helps to enhance RDU competency of nursing students. Use of case studies is a teaching and learning strategy that helps encourage students to develop thinking, practice critical thinking skills, discovery, and troubleshooting.
Research objectives: To compare knowledge and attitudes toward RDU before and after studying case studies. To assess skills, ability to think critically regarding RDU, and satisfaction in teaching-learning method.
Research methodology: This study used a quasi-experimental design with one group, pre-posttest. Population consisted of 122 nursing students in Bachelor of Science degree, Siam University. They all enrolled in Nursing Pharmacology Course, Academic Year 2020. Instruments included case studies, RDU efficacy assessment form, and assessment form of satisfaction towards teaching and learning using a case study. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.
Results: Results showed that at follow-up, RDU competency among nursing students increased, particularly, knowledge was at a high level (M =11.18, SD = 1.77), the attitude was at strongly agree level (M = 4.57, SD = 0.44), and the critical thinking skill was at a high level (M = 4.11, SD = 0.79). The satisfaction towards teaching and learning was at the highest level (M = 4.49, SD = 0.07). At follow-up, a mean score of RDU competency was significantly higher than at baseline (p < 0.01).
Conclusions: Teaching and learning using case studies related to RDU enhanced RDU competency among nursing students. Therefore, educational institutions should utilize case studies as a learning method and design learning method to constantly improve competency until graduate.
Implications: This study was conducted in a one group of students and only measured at baseline and follow-up. Hence, there should be a comparative study using other teaching methods about RDU or conducted with other year of students.
