Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is a crucial problem that can lead to death and other complications, resulting in dependence on family members.

Research Objective:  To examine the effect of family members’ health literacy development program on knowledge, health literacy, and stroke prevention behavior for hypertensive patients in the community.

Research Hypothesis: The mean scores of knowledge, health literacy, and stroke prevention behaviors of the sample group after participating the program would be higher than before participating the program.

Research Methodology: The study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest- posttest design. Samples consisted of 30 family members of hypertensive patients.  A purposive sampling was used to recruit participants.  The instruments were as follows: 1) the health literacy development program for family members, 2) a stroke knowledge questionnaire, 3) a stroke health literacy questionnaire, and 4) a stroke prevention behavior questionnaire for hypertensive patients.  Content validity index of the health literacy development program for family members was .82.  Reliability values of the instruments were .88, .80, and .84, respectively. Descriptive statistics, and pair t-test were used to analyze data.

Results: Mean scores of knowledge, stroke health literacy, and stroke preventive behaviors of the sample group at follow up   were statistically significantly higher than at baseline (p<.05).

Conclusions: The family members’ health literacy development program had significant effects on positive outcomes including knowledge, stroke health literacy, and stroke preventive behaviors.

Recommendation: The family members’ health literacy development program should be promoted among family members of hypertensive patients in community.  Also, data should be collected to assess the long-term effect of the program.
