Abstract

Introduction: Older persons with psoriasis vulgaris who have good health literacy and self-care behaviors can reduce disturbances or serious complications.

Research objectives: This correlational descriptive study aimed to examine health literacy, self-care behaviors, and the relationship between health literacy and self-care behaviors.

Research methodology:  Participants included 88 older persons who were: (a) 60 years and over; and (b) diagnosed with psoriasis vulgaris. Data were collected using a set of questionnaires, including a health literacy questionnaire for older persons with psoriasis vulgaris, and a self-care behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and Spearman's rank correlation. The questionnaires were validated using 6 experts.   Content validity index (CVI) values were 0.97, and 0.81; and the reliabilities were 0.87, and 0.85, respectively.

Result: The results revealed that 56.82% of participants had health literacy at a moderate level and 57.95% of them reported self-care behaviors at a moderate level. Furthermore, there was a moderate positive and statistically significant relationship between health literacy and self-care behavior (r = .610, p < .001).

Conclusion: The participants had health literacy and self-care behaviors at a moderate level and health literacy positively associated with self-care behaviors at a moderate level.

Implications: Results of this study provide empirical data for healthcare providers to promote the health literacy and help older persons with psoriasis to appropriately modify their self-care behavior.
