Attitudes toward Persons with Physical Disability Among Village Health Volunteers in Saraburi Province

Abstract

Introduction: Village Public Health Volunteers have a role for rehabilitating persons with physical disability to improve their physical abilities to be normal. Having a good attitude allows village health volunteers to perform well in rehabilitation, leading to improve the physical of persons with physical disability.

Research objectives: This descriptive research aimed to determine the attitude level and compare the differences of personal factors with the attitudes of VHVs toward persons with physical disability.

Research methodology: This research is a cross-sectional descriptive design. The sample consisted of 370 village health volunteers in Saraburi province using a simple random sampling method. The instruments used in this study consisted of general information questionnaire, persons with physical disability questionnaire, and attitudes towards persons with physical disability questionnaire.A Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.791. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and using t-test and One way ANOVA and using Least Significant Difference to compare paired differences.

Results: The finding showed that mean scores of the participants' attitude towards persons with physical disability were moderate level (M = 95.62, SD = 10.25). The participants about 98.6had a moderate attitude level (M = 95.19, SD = 9.61). The comparison of personal factors revealed that having relatives or important persons with physical disabilities (t = -2.162), work place (t = 2.311), and education level (F = 2.642) had a statistically significant difference in attitude mean scores towards persons with physical disability at the 0.05 level.

Conclusions: The VHV's attitude towards persons with physical disability was at a moderate level. The VHV's having relatives or important persons with disabilities, different work places, and different levels of education had different attitudes.

Implication: As well as, having positive attitude, heath volunteers could perform great job in giving rehabilitation program toward handicap people in community. In other word, handicap people could get benefit from health volunteers who having good knowledge and attitude in handicap rehabilitation.
