Registered Nurses’ Competencies in Nursing for Patients with COVID-19 of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Care Units

Introduction: Nursing competency is significant and indicative of patients’ quality of care. Registered nurses must have prominent competency to optimize effective health services to tackle with COVID-19 pandemic.
Objectives: To explore registered nurses’ competency in nursing care for patients with COVID-19 in primary, secondary, and tertiary care units.
Methodology: This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Participants included 53 registered nurses working in all levels of health service units. Data were collected using behavioral event Interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: In all levels of health service units, registered nurses’ competency in nursing care for patients with COVID-19 consisted of 7 competencies, including 1) prevention, infection control and disease surveillance; 2) screening and triage of patients; 3) effective nursing performance and safety; 4) determination, sacrifice, and devotion; 5) team working focusing on communication and coordination; 6) problem solution and patient care challenge; and 7) self-emotional control and management.
Summary: Findings of this study could be used as preliminary data and guideline for development of registered nurses’ competency during the COVID-19 pandemic in primary, secondary, and tertiary care units, which aims to improve nursing care quality leading to better quality of life among clients, families, and communities.
Recommendation: Nurses could utilize the findings of this study to self-improvement and better nursing competencies delivered to patients with COVID-19.
