Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a major mental health problem that could affect learning, lifestyle, and physical health problem both short-term and long-term in nursing students. It is also the main factor of suicidal ideas.

Research objectives: To examine depression and factors associated with depression in nursing students.

Research methodology: This descriptive correlational study  collected data from the population (479 nursing students).  Research instruments included a demographic data questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .74.  Demographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and factors associated with depression were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and Chi-square test.

Results: The results showed that 89 nursing students (18.58 %) had expose to depression. Most of them were females (18.16%), mainly, the  third-year nursing students expose to depression (5.64 %), followed by the second year, the first year, and the fourth-year nursing student (5.01 %, 4.18 %, 3.76%, respectively).  Results from correlation analysis showed that gender was statistically significantly related to depression in nursing students (gif.latex?x2 = 4.365, p<.05 ).  Age, grade level, GPA, income, family members, Illness history, and number of extra-curricular activities were not related to depression in nursing students.

Conclusions and Implications for practice:  Findings of the study revealed that nearly 19% of nursing students have depression, which is considered a relatively high prevalence. Therefore, we should seek for root cause  of depression for preventing and resolving problems attributing to depression.
