Abstract

Introduction: Among nursing students, knowledge and awareness in immunization for healthcare personnel can decrease risks of contracting or spreading diseases in nursing practicum and nursing practice to clients.

Research objectives: To examine level of knowledge and awareness of getting vaccine to enhance immunization for health personnel, and to compare knowledge and awareness of getting vaccine  among the 1st – the 4th year nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Bangkok.

Research methodology: This survey research conducted in the sample of the 1st– the 4th year nursing students. Participants were 552 nursing students enrolled in the 2561 BE academic year. Data were collected using a set of knowledge and awareness of immunization questionnaires.  The reliability of the knowledge and awareness of immunization questionnaires  were .72, and .73, respectively. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation (SD.), and one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANAOA).

Results: Finding revealed that mean score of knowledge on immunization of the 4th year nursing students was at a good level ( gif.latex?{\bar{x}}= 18.17, σ = 2.45), whereas the 1st – the 3rd year were at a moderate level. Moreover, mean score of awareness on immunization of the 3rd and 4th year nursing students was at a very good level ( gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.51, σ = .44 และ gif.latex?\bar{x}  = 4.82, σ = .34, respectively), whereas the 1st and the 2nd year were at a high level. Additionally, comparison of knowledge and awareness in immunization across years in nursing program showed that the 4th year nursing students had significantly higher mean scores than nursing students in other years (p< 0.001).

Conclusions: This study revealed that the 1st – the 3rd year nursing students possessed knowledge at a moderate level regarding immunization for healthcare workers.

Implications: The administrators of educational institute should encourage instructors   to integrate immunization guideline for health personnel to learning both theory and practicum related to nursing field. This would make nursing students to gain more knowledge and high awareness pertaining to immunization promotion.
